Founded over 100 years ago, Historic Carmel-by-the Sea is a small village in a beautiful forest overlooking a white sand beach on California's Central Coast.  Located 120 miles south of San Francisco, Carmel-by-the-Sea is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history.

Following the Great San Francisco Earthquake in 1906, where much of that city was destroyed, Carmel village was inundated with musicians, writers, poets and other artists seeking to establish an artist colony, resulting in a town where over sixty percent of its residents were devoting their lives to the aesthetic arts.

Among Carmel's most famous founders and former residents include photographer Ansel Adams, artist Salvador Dali, writers John Steinbeck, Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Sinclair Lewis, Robert Louis Stevenson, musicians Jimi Hendrix and Joan Baez, actors Kevin Costner, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Doris Day, Bing Crosby, and Clint Eastwood, who also served a term as mayor of Carmel.

The village is anchored by the historic Carmel Mission that was established in its current location in 1771.  With over 70 art galleries featuring only original artwork, intimate restaurants and inns, and its cool summer Mediterranean climate, Carmel-by-the-Sea is a favorite vacation spot for art lovers and travelers from around the world.
